Gaza Mother Embraces Daughter After Two-Year Separation Following Medical Evacuation
A heartwarming reunion took place as eight children who had been medically evacuated from Gaza as critically ill newborns have finally returned from Egypt to rejoin their families after more than two years of separation.
These toddlers were part of a larger group of over 30 severely sick infants who required emergency evacuation from Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital in November 2023, when intense military operations were taking place around the medical facility. The hospital had been taken over by Israeli military forces, who claimed the facility was being utilized by Hamas militants.
Sundus al-Kurd experienced a mixture of overwhelming emotions as she prepared to meet her daughter again on Monday. Speaking about her feelings, she expressed being caught between anxiety and happiness, concerned that her child might not recognize her as a mother following their extended separation.
Standing at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis with a carefully chosen pink-embroidered outfit for her daughter Bisan, Sundus recounted her desperate attempts to remove her newborn from Al-Shifa Hospital after Israeli forces took control. Medical staff informed her that moving Bisan from the life-supporting incubator was impossible due to the infant’s critical condition.
For nearly twelve months, Sundus remained in agonizing uncertainty about her daughter’s fate. She described living in a constant state of alternating despair and hope, desperately seeking any information about her child’s survival.
The anguished mother explained how she would scrutinize news reports and photographs of premature babies who had died at the hospital, using her maternal instincts to determine whether any of the victims could be her own daughter.
Eventually, after almost a year of torment, Sundus received life-changing news that her daughter had been identified as alive and receiving care in an Egyptian medical facility. The identification was made possible through a pink identification bracelet that had been placed on Bisan immediately following her birth.
The reunion held particular significance for Sundus, who had already endured the devastating loss of another child, both parents, and her brother by the time Bisan was born. Learning that her daughter had survived felt surreal and dreamlike to the grieving mother.
This emotional homecoming represents one of the few positive developments emerging from the fragile Gaza ceasefire arrangement implemented under former US President Donald Trump’s administration. However, the region’s long-term prospects remain highly uncertain, existing in an unstable state between active conflict and genuine peace.
The territory continues to be split, with Israeli military forces maintaining temporary authority over approximately half of Gaza’s territory. Meanwhile, Hamas appears to be consolidating its political and operational influence in the remaining areas, where the majority of Gaza’s population continues to live among widespread destruction and debris.
The comprehensive reconstruction of Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli forces are contingent upon Hamas agreeing to disarm according to the Trump administration’s peace framework, yet there are minimal indications of advancement on this crucial component of the agreement.
Nickolay Mladenov, who was designated as the high representative responsible for coordinating with Gaza’s governing authorities under the Trump plan, recently addressed the United Nations, emphasizing that the region faces a stark choice between returning to warfare or embarking on a fresh start.
However, a Palestinian official with close ties to Hamas informed reporters that the organization is expected to refuse the disarmament conditions that have been presented to them.
As Israel becomes increasingly engaged in new military operations in Lebanon and Iran, international focus has shifted away from Gaza’s situation. Nevertheless, the lessons learned from this conflict remain highly relevant, particularly regarding the complex challenges that emerge following Israeli military campaigns and the persistent difficulties in converting military victories into lasting peace agreements.
